Hands down, everybody knows about the splendid effects of face serums. On the other hand, few people pay attention to the way of using them to get 100% of their potential and power. See five simple rules to follow.
Convinced by your sister/friend/beautician, you bought a face serum, hoping it would give faster and better results than your moisturizer. Unfortunately, it’s been a few weeks since you started using it and you can’t see any improvement. The choice of the product doesn’t have to be the problem. You might have been using the serum all wrong. How to do it right? See five rules for using face serums.
How to use a face serum?
1. Never use it instead of a cream. Always pair them together.
Many women wrongly believe that serum is like cream’s substitute and so they throw a moisturizer away and use just a serum. It’s a mistake because serums and creams have different properties and effects – serum works deeply inside the skin while cream acts on its surface. Instead of replacing one with the other, first apply serum and then use a cream. This way ingredients of serum work in the deepest layers of the skin, repairing and rebuilding them, whereas the cream envelopes face with a lightweight, protective coat that locks in moisture.
2. Always use serum on clean skin.
Ingredients of a serum are tiny and effortlessly get into deep skin structures but let’s make it even easier for them. All you need to do is take makeup off, get rid of all dirt and impurities so that the serum can work wonders. The rule says you remove makeup until the next cotton pad is clean. Then, you should wash the face e.g. using a gel cleanser to get really spotless skin. After drying the face, you can apply your serum.
3. Never use oil-based products before applying serum.
Sometimes it happens that your serum doesn’t give desired results even though you thoroughly wash the face before application. What’s the reason? A face cleanser may be the wrongdoer. If it’s based on oils, it creates an occlusive layer that prevents serum from penetrating the skin. Before applying serum, don’t use oil-based makeup removers.
4. Use serum on a daily basis, not just from time to time.
Another key rule says you must use your serum regularly. You are wrong if you think it’s just a temporary treatment – your skin needs intense care and concentrated dose of nutrients all the time. That’s why the best and long-standing effect can be achieved through regular application, every day – once a day or AM and PM.
5. Gently pat the serum onto the skin.
The way of spreading the serum on the face matters as well. You should never over-stretch the skin – after all, you want to make it plumper and firmer, not the other way round. Patting the product is the best way you can use. This technique increases blood flow and makes the skin absorb the serum more quickly, plus you boost your skin’s energy.
